Midnight Thoughts

When everyones' asleep. I Reminisce.

IPL Fixed? Think again please.

The whole IPL controversy and Lalit Modi vs Shashi Tharoor Ego fight opened flood gates for all types of controversies including the Indian favourite “The match is fixed” syndrome.

Its absurd, radical, foolish and even science-fiction to think that IPL matces can be fixed. By even thinking and conjuring up theories about how its fixed, people have insulted the greats of the game like Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Adam Gilchrist, Rahul Dravid and so many more with a single thought! Rather than believing the TRP hungry media and the newspapers suffering from low readership and even lower circulation like Mid-Day, My advice to people who believe this Oscar winning tale is to use their brains which God has given them.

Anytime somebody does not like what they saw during the match or when their favourite player or team is not doing as good as they imagined in their minds, they are quick to call and label it “this match is fixed”. I have been seeing this on my Facebook, my twitter and heard this in the conversations with friends too. The sad part is everyone seems to be following the sadistic and sensationalistic coverage of the controversy. What the media has failed to distinguish is the difference between “Fixing” and “Betting”. People don’t understand the difference between the two and think of it as the same which is really sad and makes sense because people hardly pay attention in English class in school. Thank God I did. I don’t blame the media. They want TRP’s and higher readership. But I do blame people who just blindly follow something shown on TV or read in a newspaper. God has given you brains. Debate what is in front of you. YOU decide whether it is true or false. At the end if you still believe its fixed, its your opinion.

Just because a random pattern you thought or conjured in your mind came true during the match or you chose to believe your friend with “connections” who said that this team will lose and that team will win, doesn’t make the game “fixed”. It is called “Probability”. If only people paid attention in school/college when “Probability” was taught, they would have learnt that just like a coin toss which has a head and a tail, the same way, a cricket match has a loser and a winner. If you keep predicting, you will get it right one time or the other. It is the law of Averages (the real deal) and not “match fixing” (Nobel prize winning theory)

Just because the points table is tight, and any team may go through (Ofcourse leaving out Punjab and Kolkata :D) doesnt mean it is “fixed”. It just means that people did not pay much attention in school/college and now fail to understand basic probability.

Its not easy to “fix” a match. And the simple reason is that there are way too many people involved in one game. The 22 players who actually play the game. the Umpires and match officials, the team owners (no matter how shady they maybe like Team Kochi). And not to mention the ICC officials and Anti-corruption squads that are also involved in studying and observing the game for any discrepancies.

For the sake of argument. Lets believe that someone bought off a bunch of players. Do you honestly and really think that players like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Kieron Pollard will throw away their wickets? If you think yes, then you must be very much mesmerised by the MRF Blimp (which is not a blimp but just a blown up ballon) which keeps popping in during matches. If you think no, then well done. You just utilised your brains.

Since we are talking about the existence of “match fixing”. It exists in India and is done by parents living in the stone age and whose children don’t have the guts and balls to find their respective partners. THIS is called “Match-Fixing”.

My Take on Indian News Channels

I was watching the news the other day and saw that despite having a choice of about 20 odd news channels, most of them were showing utter rubbish. Here’s what i saw -

DD News - They do what they do best. Deliver REAL news and they do it without any gimmicks or over the top sensationalism. Certainly the most clear cut news channel on TV.

Star News - This news channel had earned my respect way back in the early 2000’s and late 90’s. Now they not only sensationalize the news but add in a bit of loud dramatic music, get anchors with scary faces and ponytails to anchor shows on which they shout their lungs out, they seemed to have got a fixed anchor for ALL their cricket shows. They show all Film and TV news most of the time and that to in a manner that pisses you and makes you think its the most important news of the day! They have a Garish colour theme of blue and white which give you an eye sore if you watch it for more than an hour or so. To top it all, they cover the screen with the news ticker in the bottom and a headline bar on top along with their HUMONGOUS logo leaving very little space to see anything!

Aaj Tak and Headlines Today - The erstwhile baap of all news channels. When launched, they were a no nonsense news channel and for 4 to 5 years never changed their ways. They even kept winning the Best news channel of the year in this time. But now its a completely different game. They show the news but the quality of the news has degraded to an all time low. In the first 4 to 5 years of the channel, they showed news of national/international importance. Even now they do. But along with really unnecessary and unwanted news of stray incidents and stupid rumours. Like they still show re-runs of a comedy show aired 5-6 years back. Is this what they are supposed to do? I hope they return to what they do best.

NDTV India and NDTV 24/7 - These two sister channels are the best in the business right now. They have a no-nonsense approach to news and they do it in a manner similar to DD News. There is a certain Simple approach in the way they render the news. They make it simple to the common man. Add to that a huge number of award winning journalists like Barkha Dutt and Rajdeep Sardesai. A good source of news for everyone.

India TV and News 24 - These two news channels are like brothers who got lost in the kumbh mela and have now re-united. Both show less news and more crap. And the crap is such that you will watch it and wonder WHY?! They have revolutionized the “BREAKING NEWS” concept and when a news “BREAKS” we usually imagine something of utter importance or something urgent. But what you see is stuff like “DISCOVERY OF LORD SHIVAS CAVE!” or “SCIENTISTS CLOSE TO  MAKING HUMAN CLONES” or even things like “THE WORLD WILL END IN 2012”. These channels in addition to this nonsense also air teleshopping adverts and air astrological shows and shows which promote superstition. I wonder what is the priority of these news channels.

IBN7, CNN-IBN, Times Now  and News X - The only serious news channels in the country after the two NDTV channels and DD news. They highlight the news which is important and always restrain from over-the-top gimmicks. The debates on these channels are very informative and are a blessing to the people who are starving for news.

Zee News - The least watched news channel in the country. The channel which was a favorite in the 90’s now has become obscure. It has degraded to such an extent that it kept on re-inventing itself year after year. But it never succeded. All it does is promote the Zee Group, Promotes almost every other Zee TV show (which hardly anyone watches), also promotes the ICL (The Joker’s Cricket League). Zee News enjoys bashing the BCCI every chance it gets because they refused to recognise the Zee Group backed ICL. Oh yeah, before I forget, they do show the news AFTER all this is done.

Sahara News, Voice of India, P7 News - Huh?….Whats that?

CNBC TV 18, NDTV Profit, CNBC Awaaz, UTVi, ET Now - The best business news channels in the country. Theres nothing to say against these channels as they do what they do.

This is what goes on in the Indian Media. There are some who follow the news and do their duty of disseminating news and some who need to go off-air. I just hope in the future they get their act right and start working like news channels and NOT as General Entertainment Channels.
